写真の黎明期において、被写体の動きを多重露光した連続写真で有名なフランスの生理学者エティエンヌ=ジュール・マレーが作った、「飛んでいるカモメの姿の10個の模型を配列したゾーエトロープ」をモチーフにした連作。
ゾーエトロープとはスリットのあいた円筒の中に連続した像を配置し、映画と同じ原理で像があたかも動いているかのように見せる器具である。マレーがゾーエトロープに閉じ込めた十羽の鳥は、彼が連続写真で撮影した特定の鳥の像ではなく、「鳥のはばたき」なるものを見せるために作られた抽象的な十の姿である。
私はマレーのゾーエトロープの鳥の十の姿を一つずつ絵に描き、十羽の鳥の連作とした。本作は私の大学院の修了制作で、展示の際には絵が鑑賞者を取り囲むように配置した。ゾーエトロープにおいて鑑賞者は外側から鳥をまなざすが、本作の展示構造では鳥の代わりに鑑賞者がゾーエトロープの内側に収監され、絵画のフレームの向こう側を飛ぶ鳥の姿をまなざすことになる。

A series inspired by the zoetrope created by Étienne-Jules Marey, the French physiologist renowned for his sequential photographs capturing the motion of subjects through multiple exposures during the dawn of photography. This zoetrope featured an arrangement of ten models representing a seagull in flight.
A zoetrope is a device in which a series of images is placed inside a cylinder with slits, creating the illusion of movement through the same principle as film. The ten birds Marey enclosed within his zoetrope were not specific images of birds he had photographed in sequence; rather, they were ten abstract forms created to depict “the flapping of wings”.
I drew each of the ten forms of the bird from Maray's zoetrope individually, creating a series of ten birds. This work was my graduate school final project, and for the exhibition, the drawings were arranged to surround the viewer. In a zoetrope, the viewer observes the birds from the outside. However, within the structure of this work's exhibition, the viewer is instead placed inside the zoetrope, imprisoned, and observes the birds flying beyond the frame of the pictures.
